Proposed increase in residency requirements for UK citizenship

UK Immigration minister Phil Woolas has made a statement in anticipation of a new Borders, Citizenship and Immigration bill which is expected to introduce an increase in the period of residence required to qualify for citizenship in the UK.

The bill is in its final stage and was cleared by the House of Commons at the end of July, with support from major political parties. It is widely considered to be a broad-ranging overhaul of the UK immigration situation, whose rules and regulations have remained largely unchanged since their inception in the 1950s.

Dedicated full-service public enquiry office opens in Belfast

The UK Border Agency’s latest focus on making local immigration services more visible and accessible to the communities they serve is highlighted by the new ‘one stop shop’ provision opened in Northern Ireland.

The Belfast-based office will be one of the 70 different immigration teams across the UK which has been established to provide a value-added, locally-focused service. This newly-created office, which opened on 22nd July, will employ around 60 staff under one roof, bringing together a wide range of immigration experience and services to benefit the local community.

Proposed ‘new path to citizenship’ in the UK gains momentum

August 2009 has seen the proposed introduction of a new points-based test for UK citizenship.

Rather like the current Australian scheme, the UK Border Agency is looking at ways to increase the ‘earned citizenship’ which is at the heart of a number of proposed changes to the UK immigration situation in what is seen as a major reform of the existing rules.

Changes to the UK settlement visa process in New Zealand

Administrative changes at the British Consulate in Wellington, New Zealand mean that this office is no longer processing UK settlement visa applications, including fiancée, proposed civil partner, unmarried partner and spouse visa applications.
